Google and the Mobile-ageddon

responsive_designIn case you haven’t heard, Google has warned the world that on April 21st if your website is not mobile “friendly” it could hurt you in the rankings.  The mobile-friendly web pages algorithm change happens on April 21st, 2015.  We call it “Mobile-ageddon!!!

Yes, the 3 exclamation points are necessary.

Some folks are dreading April 21st more than that other famous April day….  the 15th.

Here at Jennifer Web Design we decided months ago to make all sites we create mobile friendly.  We don’t charge extra for the service.  It is built into our standard web design package.  The writing was on the Google walls.  We saw it, and we started to address it immediately.

Should you worry?

Maybe.  It depends upon how much you care about the people visiting your site.

Google has a helpful mobile friendly test to see if your site is mobile friendly.  The test isn’t too hard to pass, and as long as your site is making an attempt to be mobile friendly, we think you will be fine.

But herein lies the rub:

Are you ranking?

If you aren’t ranking, then it doesn’t matter if your site is mobile friendly or not.

Just kidding.  It does matter.  But….

Yup…  we said it.  Mobile-ageddon!!! is probably not that big of a deal if your site is nowhere to be found… you will continue to not be found.

So you ask yourself, “WHY IS GOOGLE doing this to meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee???”

Simple answer:

A mobile optimized website is the best experience for your clients and your customers.  Google wants to return sites in their rankings that are relevant and deliver a good user experience.

We have been flooded with requests to optimize or fix sites.  Most of the time, it’s an easy gig.  As long as the site was developed in a sturdy Content Management System, we have been able to retrofit the sites for phones and tablet devices at reasonable prices.

When we are retrofitting sites, we are also encouraging our clients to refresh their SEO at the same time.  There is very little point in retrofitting your website for mobile devices if it hasn’t been optimized for the Search Engines.  At Jennifer Web Design, we have many different Search Engine Optimization plans suitable for all sizes of business.

What should you do?

Yes the 21st is right around the corner, and if you are ranking high in the Search Engines for business specific keywords you should be VERY worried.  If you aren’t ranking, don’t panic.
