Using Facebook Timeline for your Business

Facebook is having a significant impact on the success of businesses. As of February 2012, Facebook has more than 845 million active users. That number speaks for itself in terms of how vital Facebook is to our lives today and the audience that you can reach by embracing social media.

However, Facebook is constantly evolving, often to the chagrin of many. The ever changing Facebook formats are unavoidable, and it’s best to be informed and just embrace them. Come March 30th, 2012 we’ll all have the new format anyways.

That new layout is the Facebook timeline. Let’s discuss the steps to take to make sure that you are using it to its full potential.

Step 1:

Login to your Facebook business page as an administrator and then click the green “Start Tour” button in the upper right hand corner.

Step 2:

Go to the “About” section where you will choose your cover photo to go on your page. The cover photo dimensions are 851 x 315 pixels. This is a great way for you to represent your brand and add a little extra something to your page. This photo much like a personal profile photo can be changed as frequently as you like. Pay careful attention to what cannot be in your cover page.

  • Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website.”
  • Contact information such as a website address, email, mailing address, or information that should go in your Page’s “About” section.
  • References to Facebook features or actions, such as “Like” or “Share” or an arrow pointing from the cover photo to any of these features.
  • Calls-to-action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends.”
  • Covers must not be false, deceptive or misleading, and must not infringe on third parties’ intellectual property.

Step 3:

You now need to set up your profile picture. Your profile picture (just like on personal pages) will show up next to your updates and wall posts on yours and other users’ feeds. Once again, it is a good idea to choose something that represents your business. Also, make sure it is a square.

The design of the new timeline also now has your photos, likes, and apps grouped together at the top of your page. You can feature up to 12 apps here and admins can also determine which images get shown for each app in the toolbar using the Manage > Edit Page drop down via the Admin Panel.

Step 4:

In the next phase of the tour, Facebook will ask you to tweak different items on your timeline. You can modify individual stories by hiding or highlighting them, as well as changing their size. A new feature that has been implemented is the pin/anchor. You now have the ability to pin a story to the top of your timeline for up to 7 days if you feel that story warrants extra attention.

Also useful for businesses is the new Admin Panel, located at the top right of your page. Here you will be able to monitor all activity on your page such as, responding to comments, editing page settings, accessing page insights, and creating new ads.

Step 5:

The final part of the tour addresses the messages button. Just as you can on personal profiles, you now have the ability to send private messages. If someone does not want to broadcast something on your wall, they now have the option to send you a private message.

In closing, here are some other things to keep in mind when discussing the new timelines:

  • “About” section- don’t forget to give a quick synopsis of your business to your visitors
  • Friend Activity- if anyone tags themselves with your business it will show up on your timeline and people visiting your page may see people they know and be more inclined to look around
  • Milestones- you can now highlight your greatest accomplishments
  • Activity Log- you can view, manage, and organize all posts

As mentioned previously, by March 30th, 2012 whether you like it or not, the new timeline feature will be installed. It is best to get a handle on it now and start playing around with it in an effort to be acquainted with all of its features by that date. What do you think, are you on board with Facebook’s new timeline?
