Developing a Social Media Strategy that Works

In today’s world, having a social media strategy is as necessary as having air in your lungs. Okay, maybe not that necessary, but it is still extremely important to the success of your business. We experience a wide spectrum of knowledge ranging from very little to quite a lot when clients meet with us to discuss integrating their social media with their websites. Some of our clients are pros at social media, while others tend to shy away, not really knowing how much of an impact it can make. The fact of the matter is, regardless if you’ve got a wealth of social media knowledge or not, it’s always good to have a plan of attack. Here are a few tips on how to improve your social media strategy.

Always Link to Your Website
If you are a dedicated Facebook or Twitter user – that’s great, but make sure people who visit those social media platforms can easily find you on the web as well. Always make your website accessible to them. There’s a lot that you can’t say in 140 characters on Twitter or within a post on Facebook. Allow them to see more about you and your company by making it easy for them to visit your website.

Focus on what you do best
This is one that we preach to all of our clients, especially when they feel overwhelmed by social media. You don’t have to be on everything. We know; there is a lot out there. It’s quality over quantity. If you feel that a blog is going to benefit your business, then by all means blog away! However, that also means being consistent. People want to see fresh material so make sure you are setting aside time to post weekly.  If you are more inclined to choose photos over words to express your convictions, maybe Instagram is the better path to take. That’s the beauty of social media; you can choose what works best for you. Hone in on your accounts and craft them to be the most advantageous to your business.

Utilize Facebook Targeting
Facebook allows you to utilize targeting software from the admin pages. This means that you can target who sees what. Certain posts will only reach a percentage of your demographic in order to keep them interested and strengthen your appeal, while simultaneously not turning off any other viewers. Check out the targeting function on your admin page and start targeting your audience to maximize your business appeal.

Don’t Underestimate the Power of Video
We cannot express enough, how important videos are to your business. It is best to keep them short and engaging, possibly showing off something entertaining about your business. People like to see authenticity, so it helps to be able to relate to your viewers in a way they will appreciate. Be yourself whether you’re giving “how to” advice or showing a clip from an event your business held, make it true to you.

These are just a few helpful tips to keep in mind when focusing on a social media strategy. While it may seem like a burden in the beginning, it’s worth the time to sit down and really figure out what will work best for you and your company. Like anything else, it’s important not to bite off more than you can chew, but done correctly and social media can be an extremely effective tool in furthering the growth of your business.
