1. First thing we often hear is that they think it will take a ton of time. This is a misconception. Blogging for a few minutes each week is enough to get started and can take you all of under 15 minutes to do. So, time is really not a reason to not blog.

Problematic website home pages often take more than 7 seconds to load and we are gone by then. We don’t even like those flash loaders that seem to animate forever, those flash loaders are only effective if they load the flash quickly.

These overpacked websites exhude an overwhelming feeling and it is hard to find exactly what we are looking for. Obviously the person who designs a site like this thinks he or she is doing the viewers a favor by stuffing the site with anything the person could possibly want to find. However, it usually has the opposite effect. It just hurts our eyes and makes us want to click far away.

At Jennifer Web Design, we take as much time as needed to layout your page in the first concept phase, taking into consideration the purpose of your website and audience that will be visiting. We are not afraid to use white space to space out content, we recommend margins and padding whenever it makes sense. The design should be welcoming, interesting and your message should come across easily. We work with your logo (we will design your logo first if you don’t have one), your colors and brand your site to be part of your entire package. Your audience should feel the emotion or non emotion your page speaks and again, in under 7 seconds. We get that and we make it happen.

We also program with the latest innovations in animation using flash, jquery and javascript to create interesting movement, video and other effects that if added correctly will provide extra interest and value. If a feature will add value, we will recommend it.

So, what if you do have a lot of content? We organize it in ways that make sense. We provide designed CSS buttons, a search area, and or a menu system that is intuitive and clean. Content is split into very clean and clear areas that draw the eye where it should.

For a new business the right website can provide an important beacon to your potential customers.  For an established business a new website must maintain the legacy and reflect the brand awareness you have spent years cultivating.

There are many different types of websites.

A Brochure website is exactly like it sounds; it is an online representation of a brochure.

An e-Commerce website is one in which you sell stuff.

A Blog is a “diary” that is shared with the world.

One of the first things that we do with clients is to decide which style of website is right for them, and the ultimate goal of their website.  It may not seem like a hard question, but it is a very important one to answer.

Registration

The very first thing you should do is register your domain.  A good number of domains are already taken, but don’t let that worry you.  Be Creative.  Here’s a tip, if your business is based in a certain geography, try using the city, state, or county name in the URL that you register.  If you need help or advice, please contact us.

The length of your registration is up to you.  If you think you’ll be in business for a while, register the domain for a few years.  It’s cheap, and well worth the time savings of having to do it every year.  If your website is only going to be around for a short period of time, register it for one year.  You can always extend your registration at a later date.

Hosting

A host is a server where your website lives.  There are many different types of hosting you can get, and a basic rule of thumb is that you get what you pay for.  If you pay under $10 a month for your hosting service, it is likely that you are getting bare-boned service that you will need to maintain and monitor on your own with limited security.  The more you pay, the more security and ease of access you get.  At Jennifer Web Design, we offer many different hosting plans that are catered to your website needs.
