The steps below explain how to construct an effective siteplan and should be done at the start of your project.

1) Have a clear vision as to the structure of your website and what you are trying to present to your visitors. Many of our clients start out by just sketching or drawing a diagram on paper similar to a family tree navigation structure.

2) Find websites which have similar content and view their navigation buttons. Do they have drop-down menus? Are their links arranged in some logical order? Write down notes about these other websites on the things that will make sense for your website structure too.

3) Make a list of all the main sections or categories that make up your website. Break down the main categories into subsections.

4) Write a short description of each category and sub-category. Your visitor will be able to locate what they are looking for quickly and find things easily that are deeper in your website.

“Can you guide me in how to best write my website content?”

This is a great question, and the answer is an interesting one that involves many variables.

On the web, Content is King.  Content is the single most important contributor to the success of your website. This “Content King” deserves much love and attention. Focus on content should start at the beginning of your project and continue as your website is being built. Start writing your content while the website is just in the wireframe (starting phase) so that you will have time to read it, edit it, rework it and provide it to your website developer.

As you write your content, you will become much closer to your website’s purpose. You will connect with your audience in a way that gets them to take action, and getting your potential customers users to take action is the main purpose of your website.

Take the time to clearly answer these questions as you write your website content.

Who is going to be reading my content?  And what audience am I trying to attract?
Once you figure this out, communicate with these people – reach out to them.
Remember to state facts and tell stories.  Stories sell, and make that personal connection.
Make sure you write in a way that flows and is easy to read.  Talk to your users in wording that makes sense to an average reader and avoid technical jargon unless it is specific and universally accepted by your audience.

How much time will a visitor spend reading my content?
People want important information quickly.  Take the time to break up your content into focused paragraphs, bullet points, numbered lists, sections, and headings. Breaking up content makes it easier on the eyes, and easier for our brains to absorb.  Save the novel within you for your first book!

What is the purpose of my content?
Your purpose should always be to get the reader to take action.

What are the “hooks beyond the looks”?
You will need to pose interesting questions or use language that quickly draws in the attention of your user. Hook them first and do it towards the top of the page. Be generous and place these hooks beyond the home page to many pages throughout your site. These hooks should be used in various places throughout the site, and state the benefit of what you have to offer.

Seal the Deal.
The “end parts” of your content should contain “deals” – give the reader an offer that seems irresistible. Make them an offer they can’t refuse.  Even if it’s as simple as offering them to enter into a contest to win gift cards or register to receive valuable information that they can’t get anywhere else, you will capture your audience for a future sale or connection.

How to Write Content for People and SEO Robots at the Same Time?
Writing content for humans as well as for search engines can be a difficult and delicate task. As your website developer we will massage your content and advise you on the necessary SEO related changes that may be needed. Keep in mind, that while we should optimize text for Search Engines, your text still needs to flow for your human audience.  Focus on the humans, and let us worry about the robots.

Finally –

Sometimes too much of a good thing is not so good.  Don’t make your content too long. People won’t read it and it won’t necessarily help your Search Engine Optimization.

Break up your text – give people time to take a breath!  Paragraphs are not a bad thing.

Find a voice that sounds like you are speaking to someone you are familiar with. It’s people like you that are read your content. SEO Robots are important, but your SEO specialist can take care of that part.

Industry jargon works for only a small population such as your own colleagues so make sure to use it sparingly. Write in relatable terms.

Avoid the desire to write a novel in one page! Break up your content into sections. Utilize headings, sub-headings and bullet points. When possible, bold, italicize and provide emphasis to certain words.

Finally, avoid the phrase; “Welcome to my website…..” this is now considered to be happy talk that is not necessary. Welcome your visitors to your website with an inviting presence and brief concise interesting content!

I’ve been poking around for a while looking for a good, simple backup solution for MySql databases. I had been debating using  Cloudfiles because of the API and cheap storage. As I was about to pull the trigger and sign up for a Cloudfiles account then a friend of mine, the illustrious Ben Jones, sent me a link to Dropbox.

I was a little leary of it at first because I had not heard of it but after a few minutes of research and after trying it out I was hooked! I love this thing. Dropbox allows you to share files very easily using it’s software that creates a Dropbox folder in My Documents in Windows. You just drag and drop and BOOM the files are online ready to share. Well “BOOM” depends on your internet connection but it’s pretty darn fast. Not only could I share files easily but I also learned that Dropbox does file versioning. Hmmm…could I use this?

The magic came when I found out Dropbox had an API and a PHP library created by a Dropbox community user. Using the API and the library I created a PHP stream wrapper. A stream wrapper let’s you use all of the normal file commands using custom functions. So, for instance, I can now use ‘include’, ‘file_get_contents’, or ‘copy’ on Dropbox files. Now, the API is really meant for creating mobile applications but anyone can sign up for an API key and start developing. Your application isn’t widely available until you get it approved by Dropbox. Because I just wanted a backup system I could care less about making the application public.

The stream wrapper is by no means a finished, or even polished, product but it worked out for what I needed to do so feel free to use it or make it better! I’ve included the stream wrapper and a backup script. The backup script is simple:

1. Does a dump of the MySql database
2. Gzips it
3. Copies to Dropbox

In order to use it:

1. Sign up for a Dropbox account
2. Sign up for an API key by creating an application in the Developers section
3. Download the PHP library
4. Enjoy!

With the stream wrapper you can do things like:
